FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...

How much does it cost to have a cartoon created?

This is definitely the most frequently asked question. And it always the most difficult one to answer. It all depends on the time it takes me to do it and how many changes you/the client wants before we get to a final result. As a studio we charge £50/$90 per hour. If a cartoon takes half an hour you get charged £25– if it takes all week (50 hours) you’re looking at around £2500(I have to add VAT to any work carried out in the UK.)

You also have to take into account that a cartoon published in a local church magazine is going to be a lot lot cheaper than a cartoon used on a billboard in a high traffic area.

Can we use the cartoons on your web site for free?

No! They’re all copyrighted – some clients have insisted on total copyright – and their lawyers are a lot bigger and meaner than mine. Best thing to do is call or email me and we can discuss it. Please do not take anything without asking – you could get into a lot of trouble!

Why can't we use your cartoons for free?

Cartooning is a profession. It is my living. I have to pay for the office space, wages/salaries, rates to the council, heating, lighting, pay for computers, copiers, phone bills, advertising, pens, papers, pencils etc etc . Oh, and don’t forgot the Taxman! So you now know why I can’t give you them for free!

Can you give me some advice?

Hi
My name is Christine, I am 18 years of age. I have for some time now wanted to try my hand at becoming a cartoonist.  I have looked up various sites on the web.  At the moment I am considering doing the Home Study Cartoonist Institute Diploma.  Can you please give me some advice.  Is this a good way to get started and registered.  How did you start and how did you qualify.
How difficult is it to have your work published.  I would be very grateful if you would please reply to me.
Thanks,
Christine

Christine,
Thanks for your email.
My only real tip is...if you really want to be a cartoonist go for it with 110% effort. I really really really really really really wanted to be a cartoonist when I set out, I wouldn't let anything get in my way, I wasn't very good but I read every book in sight on cartooning. There were many artists out there who were tons better than me who didn't make it because of their poor attitude. I was a pretty poor cartoonist but I have an extremely positive attitude and very good ideas.
It's difficult to get published and not for the faint hearted, I had tons of rejections before I sold anything.(Enough to wallpaper the whole house.) Rejection is part of the learning process. It's hard work being a success at anything but you can get there!!!
Good luck,
Richard
